Week 2 - Assignment 3

I learned so much new information from the 10 short video clips. Firstly, phonemic awareness is a very important skill for children to begin developing at very young age. The more the parents practice the skill with them at home, the better chance their child will succeed in reading. Children must learn to link together letter and sounds by showing them how every letter has its own sound. Reading to children constantly is a great way to make them more aware of new words, especially words that rhyme and end with the same sounds. The more words the children are exposed to the more they'll come familiar with new words, until they will be able to read on their own. I am amazed at how many different strategies there are to help children develop their vocabulary and become better readers and writers. I especially like the semantic gradients strategy. It such a great way to get students to learn new vocabulary words in a hands on way. Most importantly, the last video showed the importance of assessing our students continuously. Children needs constant assessments so that the teacher can see exactly where the struggle is and where the child needs help.

  1. You are right on that one, Tova! Being a parent is not only about sending the kid off to school, doing laundry, and cooking supper. We have to be involved in our childrens education. You never know that if by reading your little 5 month old baby books daily, you are helping him in his future reading career!

  2. Tova- yes its important to constantly assess students as new problems can crop up any day and the student can really fall behind. If the problem is discovered right away and dealt with, the student can continue on with the rest of the classs.
