Week 4 - Assignment 1:
RTI
- RTI is a reading intervention program that ensures that all students get the help they needs by offering extra help to students who are struggling.
- There are 3 Tiers to the system:
- This intervention takes place in the classroom where the teachers uses individualized instruction to try and reach to each child.
- Children will generally be in the classroom with the rest of their classmates, but will be taken out several times a week. There, they will work in small groups which will give them more individualized instruction.
- Children who are still struggling in Tier 2, will be given even more intervention by mostly working out of the classroom in small groups.
- I really feel that I gained a much deeper knowledge of exactly what RTI is and how it is implemented in a classroom. I think it's great that children can get a chance to individualized attention and any extra intervention necessary. One question I still have is how can teachers who are working with children in Tier 3 help the child gain skills he's missing, while at the same time keeping them on the right track so that they don't fall even more behind from what they are missing in class?
Great explanation! As for your question, a child in tier 3 usually lags 1 or more years behind their peers. In tier 3, they work on teaching the skills the student lacks and bringing him/her up to grade level. They are not falling behind, but rather catching up.
